About
A show about the words that need a sentence.
The Long Vowel is recorded in short sessions with one guest at a time. The guest chooses the word; the hosts only ask what it does. An episode stays under three minutes, because a word explained for an hour stops being a word.
How an episode is made
One word
The guest brings a word from the language they grew up in, and a moment when they used it.
One conversation
About twenty minutes of talk, recorded in one room or over a good connection.
Three minutes
The hosts cut it down to the parts that explain the word, then write the notes and the transcript.
Hosts
Be a guest
Tell us the word, the language it is from, and a line about where you heard it last. We answer every message, usually within a week.
Thank you. Your word has arrived: we will write back within a week.
For sponsors
We take one sponsor per season. The host reads a short message before the word, and nothing in the conversation is for sale.
A season
One message read at the start of every episode of a season, and your name in the notes.
A bonus episode
A bonus episode around a word you choose, with a guest we choose.

Questions, corrections and words you think we should hear: one address for all of it.
